Cora has been living in Chinatown The Hague since the summer of 2007. The neighborhood did look a little differently, back then. For starters: there were no red lanterns hanging about.
Eileen, from Germany’s Frankfurt, moved to the Netherlands a few years ago to study at Leiden University. She’s currently completing her bachelor’s degree in International Studies there.
Chinatown The Hague is known for its Chinese street furniture and decorations. The two beautiful, detailed Chinese gateways are true eyecatchers. Did you know they are the first Chinese gateways on European soil? Street signs are in Dutch and Chinese, you will find Chinese proverbs in the pavements, and red Chinese lanterns will light the streets at night.
If you are a true gourmet, you will enjoy the authentic Asian cuisine, browse the cosy Asian food shops and take in the lovely smell of spices. A range of hospitality businesses will bid you a warm welcome for breakfast, lunch, dinner – and drinks until well after midnight. Not only the Chinese restaurants are well worth a visit for a bite to eat. What about the Japanese, Indonesian, Thai and other cuisines and snacks?
There is plenty for you to see in-between meals. Take, for instance, the special shops with exquisite Chinese silk fashion and fabrics, porcelain, antiques and furniture – each with their specific ambience and character. We even have a real record store and stamp shop for true enthusiasts.
If you want to relax, be our guest! Chinatown houses a great many beauty and hair salons, nail studios, massage salons and wellness centres. Enjoy whatever beauty treatment you fancy! Asian medicine is also well-represented by acupuncturists and other practices.
